Praha

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic situated on the Moldau river. It is often described using a number of attributes, each one characterising the city in its own way. Prague always played an important role in the history of our country and Europe. It has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is called golden Prague, magic Prague or the hundred-spired city (about 500 spires and towers can be counted here). Like the entire country, Prague is called the Heart of Europe – the city is situated in its very centre. If Rome was built on seven hills, then Prague was built on nine: Letna, Vitkov, Opys, Vetrov, Skalka, Emauzy, Vysehrad, Karlov and the highest Petrin.

The historic kernel of the capital, consisting of four medieval settlement units the Old Town, New Town, Lesser Town and Hradcany, is the largest historical town reserve in the Czech Republic and is rich in national cultural monuments. It has been included in the UNESCO world cultural heritage list.

Besides the fact that Prague is the residence of the President and central government, it is also the seat of many international organizations and representative offices, and an important centre of science, education and culture. Everybody knows Charles University, founded by the remarkable Czech King and Emperor Charles IV in 1348. Under his reign, Prague was in full bloom and many monuments were built. During the more than 1,100 years of its existence, Prague has undergone intricate development, which is evidenced by thousands of listed buildings from all styles and periods. You will find buildings in the Romanesque style, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Art Nouveau as well as Cubist styles here.

When visiting Prague, you shouldn't miss Prague Castle, the main feature of the city, which is a textbook of architecture, the burial place of Czech Princes and Kings and the seat of the Office of the President of the Republic. Another remarkable monument is the ancient Charles Bridge, named after its founder, Charles IV. Visitors will be amazed at the Old Town Square, with a unique astronomic clock situated in its centre; The National Theatre on the embankment of the Moldau river, a symbol of peculiar Czech national culture; and the former Jewish Town, today the Josefov district with a number of synagogues and one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the world.

Prague offers also other tourist attractions - the zoological garden in Troja, near the charming Troja Manor or the botanical gardens, Brevnov- the oldest Monastery in Bohemia, which was built into its present appearance based on designs by father and son Dienzenhofer. Divoka Sarka, on the other hand, is the realm of wild romance, and an important archaeological place. Famed is also the time-honoured Vysehrad - the memory of the great personages buried in its cemetery and the most magnificent vista of Prague. Other great views offers the tower of the Old Town Hall, Powder Tower, Old Town and Lesser Town bridge towers, the steeple of the Cathedral of St. Vitus, Prague Castle, Petrin Lookout, the bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, or the television transmitter on Zizkov hill.

The city has a living tradition of cultural events. The Rudolfinum, seat of Czech Philharmonic, and the Art Nouveau Municipal House, as home of the Symphonic Orchestra of the City of Prague FOK, are venues of many regular cultural events. Important cultural events are the traditional Prague Spring festival and the more recent Prague Autumn festival.

Prague consists of not only musical events, it offers a profusion of theatres, museums and galleries.
